Solaris Enterprise System – The Open, No-Cost, Software Alternative
Sun Microsystems, long considered a thought-leader in 64-bit computing, debuted its Solaris 10 operating system in January 2005. Solaris 10 was engineered with the x86-based AMD64 platform in mind:
    • Full 64-bit support for the entire AMD64 processor family
    • Optimized to run on AMD Opteron™ processor-based systems
On June 14th, 2005 Sun announced the OpenSolaris Project that offers opened source code. It is also a community and a web site for collaboration, conversation, source, downloads, mailing lists, events and developer tools.

On November 30th, 2005, Sun pioneered a shift to Free and Opened Source software by building upon the success of the OpenSolaris project and announcing Java Enterprise System, Developer Tools and N1 Software are also available at no cost. http://www.sun.com/smi/Press/sunflash/2005-11/sunflash.20051130.1.html

Currently, hundreds of Solaris-compatible applications support AMD64 technology.

Recognized as a leader among developers of UNIX-based operating systems, Sun Microsystems is a longstanding supplier to enterprise clients in the financial, Web-related, engineering, and scientific sectors.
